Yutoku Inari Shrine: A Must-See Spot Famed as a Film/Drama Location

Let’s explore the shrine!

Our walking tour of the shrine starts with ritual purification at the water fountain near the entrance. Called temizusha or chozuya, the fountain pavilion has pillars leaning three degrees inward, a style of structure known as uchikorobi. The fountain is fed by groundwater from the Taradake mountain ranges, drawn from a depth of 130 m.

A two-story, roofed gate awaits you. It is built in a style emulating the Yomei Gate in Nikko. On both sides are deities guarding the shrine. These impressive statues are made of Arita ware ceramics. Once inside the shrine precincts, you will see a building named Okaguraden directly in front of you. In addition to offering prayers at the main shrine, there are many features to see at Yutoku Inari Shrine. We asked the assistant priest for highlights even the time-pressed traveler mustn’t miss.

Highlights recommended by the assistant priest of Yutoku Inari Shrine
Inome
Literally meaning “boar’s eye,” the heart-shaped architectural motif can be spotted all over the shrine. The motif was used as a charm against fires because wild boars were traditionally believed to be very alert to fires.

Myobusha
This was once the main shrine of the temple. The building is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Saga Prefecture.

Okunoin
Reached via a long flight of stone steps, the furthest end of the shrine offers a panoramic view of central Kashima City and the Ariake Sea. Numerous red torii gates line the path up to the Okunoin, making it a popular photo spot.

Japanese Garden
Seasonal trees and flowers make the garden another popular visitor spot.

Amulets
More than 160 types of amulets and talismans are available from the shrine. Popular with visitors from Thailand are those that have appeared in a TV drama.

Take the time to appreciate the shrine’s historical treasures
Adjacent to the shrine is Yutoku Museum, which displays a permanent collection of treasures that have been in the shrine for generations. Also on view are suits of armor and swords that belonged to the successive lords of Kashima domain, as well as Kashima Nishiki (a type of brocade) items. Seasonal temporary exhibitions showcasing swords and weaponry, rare treasures, and paintings are on view from time to time.
Open daily from 8:30 to 16:30
Admission: Adult 300 yen, elementary or junior high school student 100 yen (group discounts are available)

Attention
Because there are many ups and downs, as well as stone steps, sports shoes are recommended if you intend to cover the entire shrine precincts on foot.

Access to the main shrine is via a flight of steps. If you find this daunting, it is also accessible via a newly-installed elevator (costs 300 yen per person per day. The price includes a complimentary amulet).

The approach to Yutoku Inari Shrine is lined with establishments offering plenty of dining and shopping opportunities. The cherry trees along the road come into bloom in spring.
